  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts
  • zoom in up to 400% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

Technical information about this website’s accessibility

The Department for Education is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) version 2.2 AA standard, due to the following non-compliances.

Non-accessible content

The content is non-accessible for the following reason(s):

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

  • When a screen reader or keyboard user selects a sort button on the pupil list, the page reloads and moves the focus to the pupil name text field. This forces the user to listen to the form fields again before they can find the table data they were trying to organise. This contravenes WCAG version 2.2 AA - 2.3.4 Focus Order (opens in new tab).
  • The list of pupils filters automatically as the user types, but the service does not announce these changes to screen reader users, leaving them unaware that the search results have updated. This contravenes WCAG version 2.2 AA - 4.1.3 Status Messages (opens in new tab).

What we're doing to improve accessibility

We are working to correct the accessibility issues above by ensuring all pages have page titles and cursor focus is on the top left of the screen as well as context changes being announced in a clear and concise way.
